ANNAPOLIS, MD, August 31, 2021 — Carbon Sink LLC (Carbon Sink) is pleased to announce that Joseph T. Kelliher has joined the company as a Senior Advisor, becoming the third member of the Carbon Sink Advisory Board. He will provide counsel to Carbon Sink on all matters related the company’s development including, but not limited to, renewable energy and hydrogen procurement, energy transport, governmental compliance and incentives, and contract negotiations.
From 2009 to 2020, Mr. Kelliher was Executive Vice President of NextEra Energy, Inc., a Fortune 200 company. In this role he was responsible for developing and executing federal regulatory strategy for the company and its principal subsidiaries: NextEra Energy Resources and Florida Power & Light Company. NextEra is the largest electricity company in the U.S., one of the largest renewable energy producers and one of the few truly national electricity companies, operating in every region and every organized market, with multiple business lines subject to federal regulation.
Before joining NextEra, Mr. Kelliher served as Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) from 2005 to 2009. As Chairman he guided the efficient implementation of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the largest expansion in FERC regulatory authority since the 1930s, and advanced reforms to strengthen the U.S. electricity and natural gas infrastructure.
Mr. Kelliher has spent his entire professional career working on energy policy matters, serving in a variety of roles in both the public and private sectors. These include senior policy advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Energy, majority counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, as well as positions with private corporations, trade associations and law firms.

Chairman Kelliher becomes the third member of the Carbon Sink Advisory Board, joining Mr. Paul Hanrahan and Admiral James Watson (USCG-Ret). “I am excited to join the Carbon Sink team at this important time. Reducing carbon emissions will take many steps and the Carbon Sink business plan reflects the type of innovative approach necessary to meet this challenge,” said Mr. Kelliher.
After earning a Bachelors of Science degree from Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service, Mr. Kelliher graduated magna cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree from The American University Washington College of Law.
